About Idle Sleep
Idle Sleep made its way into the market in 2017.
They currently offer 4 different models in their mattress line:
- Idle Gel Foam
- Idle Gel Plush
- Idle Hybrid
- Idle All Natural Latex
Again, the model we reviewed was the Idle gel foam model.
Idle Sleep currently has the longest sleep trial of any mattress brand available. (We’ll dive into that later.)
For now, let’s give you an inside look at the unboxing of the Idle gel foam mattress.
Idle Sleep Removal Tool
Cutting open the many layers of plastic with a razor blade is very risky; as you do not want to accidentally cut the mattress you just spent hundreds on.
The Idle Sleep removal tool is rounded plastic on one end, and the straight razor is only on the side which will touch the plastic.
This keeps the mattress itself safe and sound.
Another cool addition to the removal tool, Idle Sleep also sends you a small welcome guide.
Inside, you’ll find the simplified version of the unboxing we are about to go through, along with other Idle Sleep ideas to upgrade your sleep system.
Towards the end, Idle answers some frequently asked questions which you may have after your purchase.
Sometimes, it’s the little things.
Idle Sleep Mattress Unboxing
The mattress came nicely boxed up, as you can tell from the below photo:
The box was very durable, with handles on both sides.
It was adequately taped on both sides, which is not always the case when mattresses are shipped.
This may seem like a small thing, but the mattress in a queen size weighs approximately 110 lbs.
So, you don’t want the mattress falling through the box.
Due to the weight of the mattress, we do recommend having a second person help you move the box into the desired location.
Here is a look at what the mattress looks like out of the box, still rolled up.
We recommend going ahead and getting the mattress on your foundation while it’s in this state, before you start cutting the plastic open.
Once you cut the plastic, the mattress will start inflating on its own.
Once you cut the initial plastic, the mattress will be folded in half, as you can see from the photo above.
Typically this is when you would flip the mattress right-side up, and prepare to cut the final layer of plastic off.
However, as you can see in the below photo, Idle Sleep also sends you two free pillows!
They are sealed air tight within the same plastic as the mattress.
Since the pillows are located on the bottom of the Idle gel foam mattress, once you cut them out the mattress will start inflating.
Be prepared to quickly flip the mattress over, before the mattress fills up completely. It tends to be a little more simple to do it that way.
The photo below is what the top of the Idle gel foam mattress looks like, after approximately 10 minutes of inflation time.
Upon first look, the Idle gel foam mattress screams “comfort”, with its cover design.
Idle Sleep Expansion Time
You can actually lay on your Idle gel foam mattress within minutes of it starting to inflate.
Just keep in mind that it will take around 24 hours before it’s fully inflated, to feel the way that it truly should.
24 hours for the mattress to fully inflate is actually a shorter inflation time than other bed-in-a-box brands, which can take up to 48 hours.
To us, this is another win for Idle Sleep.
Idle Sleep Off-Gassing
It is very common with memory foam that has been compressed to release a little bit of off-gassing when the plastic is first cut off of the mattress.
Idle Sleep was no different.
Although, admittedly I had to put my nose directly down on the mattress (Yes, we really do that.) to get a hint of the smell.
Off-gassing can take up to 48 hours to fully dissipate with a lot of mattress brands.
With Idle Sleep, I didn’t notice the smell within minutes of it being out of the plastic; which is impressive.
Idle Sleep Cover
It is made with a high quality 450GSM fabric, which is washable.
This cover also has natural thermal capabilities.
What this means, is that it conforms to your body temperature.
When you feel cold, the mattress will sleep warm.
If you feel warm, the mattress will sleep cool.
While it is not uncommon to find memory foam mattresses that sleep cool, it is a rarity to find a mattress that will adjust to your body temperature.
Fire Resistant Barrier
A nice addition to the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress is the 100% natural cotton barrier that it has between the cover and the first layer of the mattress.
It has no petroleum-based synthetic nylon or polyester.
Also, it is free of carcinogenic chemicals, gases, toxins, HCN, HCI, and bromine.
So, not only is this flame retardant, it also doesn’t contain some of the nasty chemicals that some mattress brands have.
Idle Sleep Layers
Within the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress, there are 3 layers which make up their gel foam model.
Idle Cooling Buoyancy Foam
The first layer is 3″ thick and made up of cooling buoyancy foam.
Gel infused, this layer reacts quicker than your average memory foam mattress.
This layer is responsible for not only offering you support and pressure relief – but also for cooling you down while you sleep through the night.
Supportive Transition Foam Layer
The second layer of the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress is the supportive transition foam layer.
This layer is 2″ thick and allows the mattress to have better breathability.
Constructed with perforated holes, this also adds to the mattresses overall responsiveness.
Idle High Density Foam Base
The final layer of the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress is the Idle high density foam base.
As with pretty much every memory foam mattress, this layer is the thickest of the three, coming in at 7″ thick.
The purpose of this layer is to provide stability to the mattress, and also offer additional support.
Where Idle Sleep stands out is:
- They offer an additional 1″ of thickness compared to most other brands
- They have a core density of 2.4lb, as opposed to the industry average of 1.8lb
This allows the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress to not only be a little more stable than the competition. But also have a core density at least 30% greater than the average in the industry.
Fire Proof Cloth
Much like the fire resistant barrier on the top of the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress, towards the bottom Idle also has an additional fire proof cloth.
Just like the fire resistant barrier, it has no petroleum-based synthetic nylon or polyester, and is free of carcinogenic chemicals, gases, toxins, HCN, HCI, and bromine.
The Idle Sleep gel foam also comes with another cover at the bottom of the base.
This is something that is not the norm for most mattress brands, and it makes mattress cleaning easy.
You can simply unzip the durable cover to remove it, and it is washable.
If you have done any amount of mattress research, you’ll notice that most mattress brands recommend spot cleaning only.
Idle really goes above and beyond with their gel foam mattress covers being washable.
All of the foams used in the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress are CertiPUR-US certified.
What this means for you, is that you can rest easy, knowing that your mattresses are:
- Made without ozone depleters
- Made without PBDE flame retardants
- Made without mercury, lead and other heavy metals.
- Made without formaldehyde
- Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission
- Made without chlorofluorocarbons
- Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million)
- Performance tested
Idle Sleep Sinkage
We would rate the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress around a 5.5-6 on the firmness scale.
As you can tell from the photo above, when I apply some weight with my hand, there is a little sinkage – but overall wonderful support.
Not many people want to sleep on something hard as a rock – but you also don’t want something so soft you sink straight through, as it is not good for spinal alignment.
If you are looking a mattress not too firm but not overly soft, we feel you should definitely consider this Idle mattress.
Idle Sleep Edge Support
When it comes to edge support, one thing to keep in mind is that hybrid mattress will always perform better than memory foam.
This is due to also having a coil system in addition to memory foam.
The Idle Sleep gel foam mattress does have a little bit of “give” on the edges of the mattress.
This isn’t a big deal when it comes to sitting on the edge, (for example when you first wake up in the morning), because the 7″ support layer underneath has you covered.
If you were to sleep very close to the edge however, you may feel like you are going to roll off.
During our review, two people slept together through the night, and this was not the case.
We felt adequately supported.
Idle Sleep Motion Transfer
With cooling buoyancy foam, it is possible to feel a slight amount of motion transfer.
This type of foam is a little more bouncier than some foams that can be used in mattresses.
However, while sleeping with a partner the motion transfer basically goes unnoticed.
Even with a restless partner beside you, you’re most likely not going to feel the movement transfer to your side. (Or vice versa)
Idle does a great job of adding bounce, while minimizing the motion transfer overall.
What most people do not think about, but you always want to consider when looking to purchase a mattress, is your sleep position.
Much like with bodyweight (we will get to that shortly), mattresses are not a ‘one size fits all’.
Let’s take a look at how the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress fares in different sleep positions.
If you sleep on your side, the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress may be right for you.
It does a great job of offering support to your shoulders and hips while you sleep.
The more you weigh, the more support you’re likely to feel.
Back sleepers are probably who would benefit the most from this mattress.
Considering that the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress is both comfortable and supportive – back sleepers should find that this mattress does very well with spinal alignment while you sleep.
For stomach sleepers, the Idle Sleep gel foam can be hit or miss.
I myself am a stomach sleeper (200 lbs), and felt that the mattress was perfect for me.
However, the mattress does have a soft cover, and other reviews indicate that some stomach sleepers may feel like they are sinking too much.
Again, this would be dependent on body weight as well.
If you are a light or average weight individual, the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress will be a good choice.
If you’re heavier, then you may want to look at other options.
Body weight will always play a factor when it comes to searching for a mattress.
With the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress, it can be broken down like this:
If you weigh less than 130 lbs, the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress will work for you in any sleep position.
You aren’t heavy enough to sink if you sleep on your stomach.
If you sleep on your side or back, then you will notice the support well with this Idle mattress within your spine, hips and shoulders.
With an average weight individual (130-230 lbs), the results are pretty much identical to lightweight sleepers.
The only difference being because you weigh more, you will actually feel more of the support your body is getting.
No matter the sleep position, if you fall into this category, it is worth giving the Idle Sleep gel foam a try.
With the Idle Sleep gel foam mattress, this really only becomes an issue if you sleep on your stomach.
You may feel as if you’re sinking into the mattress, which can be bad for your spinal alignment overall.
If you are a side or back sleeper however, you will feel great support in your hips, shoulders and spine.

That’s less than the cost of 1 meal, and you can own the mattress brand with an 18 month trial period.
Shipping and Sleep Trial
Currently Idle Sleep only ships to the contiguous United States, via UPS.
Shipping is free rather you are purchasing your mattress, or returning it if it isn’t right for you.
Idle Sleep currently owns the longest sleep trial of any mattress brand available.
They give you 18 months, a full year and a half to try out your Idle mattress to see if it is the right fit for you.
Most mattress brands have a 100 night sleep trial – so Idle really sets the bar high here!
We at Mattress Deals Online always recommend trying your mattress out for a minimum of 50 nights, as it does take some time for your body to adjust.
Idle Sleep Warranty
Idle Sleep offers what they call a “Without End” warranty; which is a limited lifetime warranty.
What this means is your mattress is covered from manufacturer defects for as long as you own your Idle mattress.
If you experience any of those problems, Idle Sleep will repair or replace the mattress for you.
What is Covered
Your Idle mattress is covered from the following:
⦁ Deterioration causing the Mattress to have a visible indentation greater than one (.5”) inch that is not associated with an indentation or sag which results from use of a non-flat resting surface or improper or unsupportive bed base. Normal wear requires that a Mattress be continuously supported by a resting base, bed, foundation or floor sufficient to support the collective weight of the Mattress and sleeper(s).
⦁ Any physical flaw in the Mattress that causes the foam material to split or crack, despite normal usage and proper handling.
⦁ Any manufacturing defect in the assembly of the Mattress Cover.
⦁ Any manufacturing defect relating to springs or other mattress components.
What is Not Covered
The below items are not covered by your Idle Sleep warranty:
⦁ A normal increase in softness of the foam pressure-relieving material which does not affect the pressure-relieving qualities of the Mattress.
⦁ Comfort preference beyond the 18-Month (540 Day) day risk free trial period.
⦁ Physical abuse or damage to the structure and/or cover material, including but not limited to, burns, cuts, tears, liquid damage, or stains; provided, that the Defect is caused by such abuse or damage.
⦁ Replacement of any non-defective pieces in the IDLE Sleep Mattress system (for example, if you purchase a mattress with multiple components and only one component is defective, then we will only replace the defective component).
⦁ Any mattress (whether manufactured by IDLE Sleep or not) sold by resellers who are not authorized retailers of IDLE.
⦁ Mattresses sold “as-is”, “preconditioned”, “reconditioned”, “used”, “comfort return”, “returned”, “previously owned”, or any other similar wording indicating that the Mattress is not “new” or of “first quality”, or has previously been purchased or used by another consumer.
As with any mattress brand, the warranty is only good for the original purchaser, and is not transferrable.
We see why it’s so hard to find many Idle Sleep bad reviews.
This was one of the very few mattress brands we have ever rated a 49.
Idle mattress really stands out as one of the best mattresses we’ve ever reviewed hands on.
It’s one of the few mattresses that has a cover with thermal capabilities.
Their gel foam mattress has the perfect amount of bounce with next to no motion transfer, thanks to their buoyancy foam.
Combine this was the industries longest sleep trial of 18 months, and payment options as low as $9 per month – you can’t go wrong giving Idle Sleep a chance to earn your business.
